Today was the day.
I made it across the finish line.
I started eating again.
I did not consume anything but water for the past three days and
nights.
And boy, did that piece of fruit taste incredible this
morning.
But anyway, let me give you a quick summary of my first
ever water fasting experience.
The first about 32 hours were definitely the toughest.
Friday, the first day, I was very hungry.
I was jittery and could tell that my body was craving
glucose.
Around 4pm the hunger went away and I just felt extremely
weak and sluggish.
Around 8pm I got extremely hungry again, probably the
hungriest I have ever been in my life.
I drank two glasses of water and that seemed to do the
trick; my hunger slowly vanished.
I went to bed around 11pm and slept until about 9am - so
about 2 hours longer than I usually sleep.
The second day, Saturday, I felt extremely weak, but not
hungry, much to my surprise.
I did a little reading, but had a hard time focusing,
So I ended up just hanging out most of the day.
Oh, I also wrote a blog post, so if you missed that
one, click here.
On the bright side, I ended up falling asleep around 10:30pm,
which is definitely a few hours earlier than I usually fall asleep on a
Saturday night.
Upon waking on Sunday, I felt incredible.
This must have been due to the fact that my body went into ketosis.
In a nutshell, ketosis is when the body starts breaking down
stored fat for energy.
I had a pretty normal level of energy and had no trouble climbing
up multiple cases of stairs without feeling exhausted after.
I fell asleep around 12:30am on Sunday night.
It was hard not to think about the awaiting pleasure of
eating in the morning, but after about 40 minutes or so my mind came to rest
and I fell into a deep, relaxing sleep.
Overall, I was surprised at how well these three days of
water fasting went.
Contrary to my expectations, I did not have severe
headaches, joint pains, or any of the like.
I did feel very weak though, but that was to be expected.
On another note, I was very surprised at how well I slept.
I slept longer and seemingly deeper than usual and felt very
rejuvenated in the morning, especially Sunday morning.
All in all, these three days were most definitely worth it.
I gained a lot of mental clarity and formed a completely new
relationship with food.
Food is more of an option than a need now.
It almost seems comical how much we eat every day, knowing
we could all survive without any food or calories for weeks.
The effect abstaining from something as
fundamental as food can have on your mind is truly amazing.
Overall, I feel very clean and healthy.
If you are contemplating water fasting, I would advise you
to do thorough research beforehand.
There are certain health conditions that can make it very
risky.
However, if you feel like you are ready for it, I’d say go
for it.
I’d love to hear about your experience afterwards!
Also, if any of you are interested in healthy dieting and
the like, I would highly encourage you to watch the BBC documentary “Eat, Fast
and Live Longer”.
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
Stay tuned.
